The Last Distant Speck
I sit alone upon a seat
suspended by two chains
My friends all ran away so quick
by the coming of soft rains
Far away I see a speck
and the smoke that trails behind
A rocket straight up through the clouds
The last, my brain reminds
I look up at the speck and dream
of a world beyond this earth
A world of wonders rarely seen
Between days of Death and Birth
I dream about the Astronauts
floating way up in the blue
I push my legs to meet with them
As a member of their crew
We’d see the stars around us fly
Watching planets as they spun
We’d see the start of every day
And the setting of every sun
But as my dreams are brought back down
By the earth’s eternal pull
I feel a sharp pain return to my chest
Cough
I hobble home and lie in bed
Still I dream about the Astronauts
above the world so high
Soon, I guess, I’ll join them
A diamond in the sky
